Transdisciplinary online lab & hub in neuroscience and biomedicine through the lens of complexity science

Transcending and working across boundaries through the science of complex adaptive systems, which combines uniquely natural sciences, social sciences, and philosophy.

NeuroCreare was founded to develop a holistic understanding of the interconnected and complex relationships between the brain, mind, body, and world, for the benefit of patients and society.

It is about researching, creating, and solving by thinking across boundaries.

Neurological and medical diseases do not exist in isolation but interact in complex ways with biological, environmental, and psychosocial factors. These interactions require research methodologies that go beyond reductionist methods. Complexity science – an inter- and transdisciplinary framework that explores how relationships between system components lead to emergent behaviours – provides a holistic approach to tackling these challenges.

Adopting a cross-disciplinary approach encourages innovative ideas, tackles complex problems, and supports engaging research beyond conventional boundaries.

Addressing complex problems that cannot be understood or solved by a single discipline or even a combination of academic fields alone. Transdisciplinary research is not just about understanding complex issues but also about developing practical, sustainable solutions. This often involves creating new frameworks or models that can be applied in real-world settings.

Objective

Main Aim: NeuroCreare seeks to develop transdisciplinary methods, tools, solutions, and services that combine traditional scientific approaches with complex adaptive systems (CAS) theories to tackle complex biomedical challenges. It offers a suitable framework for investigating the intricate linear and non-linear interactions across various disciplines and services.

Impact

At NeuroCreare, we strive to bridge the gap between pure and applied sciences for the benefit of patients and society. We aim to establish new foundations for designing, managing, and controlling systems with complexity beyond current methods.

Patient Outcomes

This innovative approach seeks to enhance patient care by identifying bio-clinical, psychosocial, and digital markers for early prevention/diagnosis, monitoring, and personalised treatments.

Societal Impact

NeuroCreare aims to impact everyone’s life in many ways, including welfare, health, education, and public policies; we want to promote a lasting harmony between scientific advancement and societal needs.

The cross-disciplinary approach at NeuroCreare aids in tackling complex problems.

At NeuroCreare, we’re dedicated to deepening our understanding of the intricate connections between the brain, body, mind, and the world, using complex systems as a lens. Our goal is to reveal the underlying principles, properties, and purpose of this connectivity. We apply complex adaptive system theories to develop “intelligence” that can help address societal challenges.

Clinical & Translational Neurology

Identifying and validating immunological and digital biomarkers for early diagnosis, monitoring, and developing personalised treatment regimens for patient-specific profiles in neurological cal and neuropsychological disorders.

Digital Neurology & Health

Development of standardised and digitised clinical rating scales for recording and quantifying neurological symptoms, including algorithm-based feedback systems for clinical research.

Exploring the ethical implications of AI and digital neurology, particularly regarding data privacy and patient autonomy.

Complexity Science

To create an interdisciplinary hub for studying the human brain, biomedical sciences, and neuroscience using complexity science to address critical questions about the brain, mind, consciousness, behaviour, and health.

Scientific-Philosophical Wandering

By using complex adaptive system theories, to address critical questions about the brain, mind, consciousness, behaviour, health, and society.

Brain, Mental and Body Health

Exploring Complex Subjective Patient-Reported Outcomes and Experiences. Software specialising in narrative-based mixed methods will be used for exploratory, qualitative, and observational health studies to capture experiences and complement traditional clinical measures.

To Map Subjective-Objective Symptom Relationships in Brain and Mental Health Disorders by combining qualitative and quantitative data. To investigate how subjective patient narratives about symptoms and emotional states align or diverge from clinical assessments and biomedical measurements (e.g., symptom scales, biomarkers) in psychiatric and neurological conditions.

Biomedicine

Complexity and Predictability in Disease Management. Explore if chronic and multifactorial neurological disorders can be managed more effectively by categorising them within the Cynefin framework.

Sociocultural Health

Exploring the Impact of Neurological Conditions on Mental Health and Social Well-Being. Software will be used to gather narratives at scale from patients detailing the mental health impact of their neurological conditions, focusing on areas such as social isolation, identity changes, and emotional challenges. Self-signification tools allow participants to categorise these narratives, identifying patterns in emotional and social responses
